Let's jump in...

7 trends for a new wave of Education x Entertainment

We're sensing a ton of new opportunities opening up in what's often been known as 'Edutainment'. Here are 7 themes we're especially excited about:

1. Liquid IP
2. UGE (User Generated Edutainment)
3. Open World Learning
4. Play-to-Learn-to-Earn
5. Brands as Neo Educators
6. Teachers are the new DJs
7. Cultural Institutions Reimagined

There's also a secret formula that unlocks the magic of all these themes...

Curious to learn more? We're currently building a mixed-media trends deck and workshop series for you to explore this with us. It's all going live in a few weeks' time, but for a sneak-peek (or to contribute), just hit reply.

Wavetable Livestreamin'

Last Wednesday I hosted our first live stream session. Honestly, I was way more nervous than when I've run live workshops for hundreds of senior execs at big companies. Weird. Our brains play mysterious games...

In the first episode we offered 4 solutions to this question on public speaking and facilitation:

“How do I find the balance between being natural and in the flow vs rehearsed Ted talk style?"

We'll be returning next Wednesday, this time getting into how to create effective client workshops.

Hot & Cool

Marshall McLuhan coined two categories of media: hot & cool. Here’s what Hot & Cool in our world right now.

Cool: Forging new paths in music education. We can probably all agree that music is magical. When it comes to education, there are all kinds of skills music can help develop. Yet in the US, the vast majority of middle and high school students don’t take any music classes at all. Crazy, right? We're loving this short film from music tech company Ableton, featuring 3 music teachers who are taking fresh approaches to empowering young people to develop their music creation skills.

Hot: UN-backed TV show saves lives through Edutainment. A new report conducted by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine indicates that after watching the MTV Shuga TV show ‘Down South’, young people in South Africa were twice as likely to get tested for HIV. Globally, the initiative has reached young people in 72 countries, broadcasting to an estimated 720 million homes.

Commercial Break

You've got some things on your mind. No, not just what happens in season 3 of "Succession", or whether it's safe to reheat basmati rice in the microwave. You're more interested in how to offer people new opportunities for growth and connection.

Perhaps it's an off-site for your team; creating a workshop for a client; or maybe you're wondering how to freshen up all the online stuff you've been doing (let's be honest, it's about time).

Whatever you're building, we're here to help you make it meaningful, lively, and legit. Hit the button to chat through some ideas with us.

The Word on the Wire

What we’ve been hearing from our clients and community:

“There's a real need for something like Red Bull Music Academy... but it's more likely to be 20 smaller, interconnected projects instead of one huge program.”

“Working at a startup led by a team of scientists is amazing, but explaining what we're doing to the world? Umm... it's a problem."

That's all for this edition - we'd love to get your questions, input, and vibes. Just hit reply.

Until next time,

Howard & the Wavetable team
